Anders Hultqvist is a composer and Professor emeritus of Composition. Former Head of Research and asst. Head of dept. 2016-2023 at the Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg.
Hultqvist’s various commissions and composition projects (1985-2025) consists of works for orchestra, solo with orchestra, choral works, various chamber music constellations, and sound installations. But also, musical drama, electroacoustic works, as well as film and theater music. In addition, curating musical and scientific events as a festival director, a conference organizer, and journal editor. Hultqvist’s artistic research has mainly been carried out within the fields of Urban and rural sound studies, Musical creation/interpretation, and Ecological Sound Art. Research projects, as well as artistic compositional work, frequently takes as its point of departure a combination of artistic, literary, cognitive, physiological, and social perspectives.
Some of the more extensive artistic research projects include Composition at the limits of the conceptual. A shrinking emptiness - meaning, chaos and entropy (2015-19) which explored the artistic creation of meaning in musical and literary composition. The research project Towards an expanded field of art music was a three-year project around the work concept and our interpretational musical tradition. In Journal for artistic research, JAR under the title “Who creates the creator" - and the limits of interpretation? The two projects Transmission – Urban experiments in Sound art and Sonic space, and Into Noise (2005- 2011) were carried out within the research group USIT – Urban Sound Institute.
More recent activities include Sounds by Water and Trees/Invisible Sounds which is both a compositional as well as an Ecological Sound Art project exploring place through the minute detail of sound and vibration, also beyond the limits of human listening. An ambisonics album publication on Footprint Records, and in: Östersjö, S.
